About
Bullion Coins is a reference guide to the coins people buy for their metal content: gold, silver, platinum and palladium issues from the main mints of the world. For each coin we explain the specifications, the history and how it is priced against the metal it contains, and we publish practical guides on buying, storing and selling.
We do not sell coins and take no commission. Specifications come from the issuing mints; price explanations describe how the market works, not where it is going. Nothing on this site is personal investment advice.
What you will find here
- Coin profiles: the Krugerrand, the American Eagles, the Canadian Maple Leafs, the British sovereign and Britannia, the classic European gold coins, Mexican silver and the palladium issues, each with a specifications table.
- Price guides: how spot prices for gold and silver are set, how to turn a spot price into the metal value of a coin, and why the price you pay is always a little higher.
- Buying guides: how to compare dealers, what premium to expect, how to spot a fake and what to check before you sell.
- Values and grading: when a coin is worth more than its metal, and how the 70-point grading scale works.
How the guide is written
Each page is written by the editorial team and signed as such. We prefer facts that can be checked: weights, finenesses, face values and launch dates are taken from the mints’ own specifications. Where something varies by country (sales taxes, VAT, capital gains rules) we describe the principle and invite you to check the rules where you live, rather than quote a rate that may have changed.
We do not give price forecasts. Bullion prices move every day, and a page that told you where gold or silver was heading would be out of date, or wrong, within weeks. What does not change is the arithmetic: fine weight, spot price, premium and spread. That is what the guide focuses on.
Corrections and suggestions
If you find an error in a specification, or would like a coin covered that is not here yet, write to us through the contact page. Corrections are made directly in the article.
